| European Prostate Day
on 15/9/2005

Rotary Club of Heraclion organized in Atlantis Hotel on Thursday 15-9-2005
a European Prostate Day, a speech by well known urology doctor Mr Fragiskos
Sofras, manager of the urology clinic of PAGNH, concerning prostate diseases.
The aim of the speech was to sensitize men as well as their spouses to the
prevention of prostate diseases and mainly of cancer.
Prostate is a gland that has an important role to men's ejaculation and
fertility. It is prone to three main types of diseases: a) prostatitis,
an inflammation that is cured with antibiotics and concerns sexually actives
adolescents and young men, b) adenoma or hypertrophy, a benign disease frequent
after 45-50 that hits over 50% of men after the age of 70 and is confronted
with medicine or surgery and does not lead to cancer and c) prostate cancer,
second death cause of men after lung cancer, with 95% of cases striking
between 57 and 88 years old. It is frequent but relatively slow. Danger
factors are age (over 60 years), geographical origin (more frequent at North
America and North Europe), great consumption of fat and red meat and inheritance
(2 to 3 times greater danger).

Prostate cancer is traced by the classic rectum examination with fingers
and by the measurement of a special prostate antigen known as PSA. Its treatment
includes total removal, high energy roentgenotherapy, hormone therapy and
chemotherapy, depending on the case.
The main point highlighted by mr. Sofras is the timely prevention that
is accomplished with the yearly visit of all men above the age of 50 to
urologist for clinical examination and PSA measurement.
